Egg in an egg cup: how to cook a creamy egg
A creamy egg has a set white and a yolk that is glossy and thick like cream. It runs slowly, so it stays in the shell and on the spoon. Here is how to cook the egg for the egg cup.

Cooking time: 6 minutes
for a medium (53–63 g) egg straight from the fridge in boiling water at sea level
A soft-boiled, creamy, jammy or firm egg isn't fully cooked. Follow the egg advice where you live, especially for anyone pregnant, young children, older people and people with weakened immune systems.
Cook creamy eggWhy a creamy egg for the egg cup?
You eat from an egg cup with a spoon, and a thick yolk stays put better than a runny one. Creamy is thicker and slower than soft-boiled, with a thin, firm edge on the outside. If you would rather dip toast in the yolk, soft-boiled is an egg for the egg cup too.
How to do it
- Bring enough water to cover the egg to a rolling boil in a small pot. Take the egg straight from the fridge and lower it in with a spoon.
- Tap Start right away. A medium (53–63 g, about a US large) egg straight from the fridge should cook for 6 minutes in boiling water at sea level. If your egg is larger or at room temperature, or you cook at altitude, the timer works out the time for you.
- When the alarm goes, put the egg straight into cold water for 1 minute to stop the cooking.
- There is no peeling. Set the egg in the egg cup and tap the top off gently with the back of a spoon.
Two tips
- Eat the egg while it is warm, straight from the egg cup.
- If you cook several eggs, put them in the water at the same time and use the same size, so they finish together.
