About Perfect Eggs

Perfect Eggs is a free egg timer made in Norway, for Norwegian conditions: the egg sizes sold in Norway (S, M, L and XL), advice from the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet), and the altitude you choose, whether you’re boiling eggs by the sea or at a cabin in the mountains. It’s made by App, App, APP! AS, a Norwegian company with a Norwegian owner.

Why

The idea came on a cabin trip. At more than 1,000 meters above sea level, the eggs didn’t turn out quite the way they do at home.

Water boils at a lower temperature the higher you go. At 1,000 m above sea level it boils at about 96.5 °C, so the egg needs more time.

So I made Perfect Eggs.

The cooking times

The times are calculated and spot-checked, not guessed: they’re worked out with a physical model of how heat moves into the egg. We haven’t tested every combination of size, starting temperature, water and altitude, so we can’t promise that the egg will turn out the way you want. If it’s too soft or too firm, answer “How did your egg turn out?” after the alarm, and the app adjusts the time for your next egg of the same type. The adjustment is stored on your phone.
